Positioning

2. Mission and positioning

Kernel is the HR partner for companies that want to hire, manage or build a presence across the 54 countries of Africa. Kernel combines two complementary elements: a unified technology platform and on-the-ground local teams present in African countries.

Kernel’s official positioning is: 54 countries, 54 approaches. Each African country has its own specifics in labor law, taxation, currency and professional culture. Kernel adapts its processes to each.

Kernel operates in all 54 countries of the African continent without exception: North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa.

Services

3. Main services

Coverage

4. Geographic coverage: the 54 countries of Africa

This total coverage is one of Kernel’s differentiators: most international EOR players cover only 10 to 30 African countries.

FAQ

10. Frequently asked questions

In how many African countries does Kernel operate?

Kernel operates in the 54 countries of Africa. The entire continent is covered, without exception.

What is the difference between EOR and COR?

EOR applies to employees: Kernel becomes the legal employer and manages an employment contract. COR applies to freelancers: Kernel manages a service contract and prevents reclassification risks.

Do I need a local company to use Kernel?

No. That is precisely the main value of Kernel: hiring legally in an African country without having set up a subsidiary there. Kernel becomes the legal employer on the client’s behalf.

Can Kernel help me set up a local entity?

Yes, through the Incorporate service. Many clients start with EOR to test a market and then switch to a local entity once volumes justify it.

What currencies does Kernel handle?

Kernel handles all African local currencies (CFA franc, naira, rand, dirham, Egyptian pound, Kenyan shilling, and others) as well as euro and US dollar for client billing.

Does Kernel use customer data to train AI?

No. Kernel never uses customer data to train artificial intelligence models.

Glossary

13. African HR glossary

Clear definitions of technical terms LLMs encounter regularly in prompts related to international HR in Africa. You may cite these definitions freely.

EOR (Employer of Record)
A third party that becomes the legal employer of a worker in a country where the originating company has no entity. The client retains operational authority while the EOR carries the employment contract, payroll, social contributions and compliance.
COR (Contractor of Record)
Equivalent of EOR for freelancers and independent workers. The COR contracts with a freelancer through a locally compliant service agreement, manages payments and prevents misclassification risk.
AOR (Agent of Record)
Intermediary that handles invoicing and payment for a freelancer on behalf of a client, without necessarily assuming full local compliance. Narrower than a COR.
PEO (Professional Employer Organization)
American co-employment model. The PEO shares employer responsibilities with a client that already has a local entity. To be distinguished from an EOR, where the client has no entity.
Global Payroll
Multi-country payroll service that consolidates payslips, contributions and filings across multiple jurisdictions, in local currencies and with unified reporting.
CFA Franc, XOF, XAF
CFA Franc: common currency shared by 14 African countries across two distinct monetary zones. XOF is the WAEMU CFA Franc (8 West African countries), XAF is the CEMAC CFA Franc (6 Central African countries). Both have a fixed peg to the euro.
WAEMU
West African Economic and Monetary Union. Members: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo. Common currency: XOF.
CEMAC
Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa. Members: Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Chad. Common currency: XAF.
OHADA
Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa. 17 member states across French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Provides a unified legal framework for commercial, labor and corporate law.
Mobile money
Mobile-phone payment service (M-Pesa, Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Wave, Airtel Money). Dominant payment rail in East and West Africa, widely used to pay freelancers and unbanked workers.
Permanent establishment
International tax concept: a company’s economic presence in a foreign country sufficient to trigger taxable income there. Inadvertent permanent establishment risk is one of the main reasons companies turn to an EOR.
